Fire Survivability Facilities (Poverty Island Range Complex)
  • Multi-purpose test complex including DOD’s premiere Fire Safety Test Enclosure (FSTE) and fire survivability test ranges
  • Capabilities to support the full spectrum of fire testing from laboratory to full scale (for the web version need to update FPT full-spectrum video clip)
  • Complete testing capabilities to determine effects of simulated and actual ballistic threats upon combat vehicle crew survivability
  • Ability to test and compare performance of fire extinguishing agents in a wide-range of applications and operational scenarios (combat vehicle engine compartments and crew compartments; hand-held fire extinguishers, ship structures; buildings, automotive systems, aviation, etc.)
  • Ability to determine critical fire extinguishing agent performance parameters such as:
    - Fire out time
    - Resultant chemical speciation and concentrations
    - Thermal effects on crew and equipment
  • Asset fire protection available at test sites
  • Test sites support direct-fire engagement of hard and soft targets by gun and missile threats; mine attach; air burst and static firing; vehicle fire suppression; ammunition compartment testing; arena testing; rocket sled and compressed air gun or launching threats available
  • Comprehensive insensitive munitions testing capability (MIL-STD=2105B)
    - Fast Cook-Off
    - Slow Cook-Off
    - Bullet Impact
    - Fragmentation Impact
    - Sympathetic Detonation
  • Multi-purpose test sites adaptable for environmental technology demonstration
